Time for a #MusicalBibleStudy discussion. The last few days we have been listening to a new take on an old classic, Be Thou My Vision.
This is actually thought to be one of the oldest Christian hymns still sung to date, originating in Ireland over 1500 years ago.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105
Addie’s favorite part of the song is the first verse. In her own words she says it means “that God is leading us on the right path 24/7 but we have to choose to follow.”
As for myself I appreciate the alternative lyrics used in the latter verses of this version.
“Riches I heed not
Nor man’s empty praise
Thou my inheritance
Now and always
Thou and Thou only
First in my heart
High King of Heaven
My treasure Thou art”
In an age when we all too often get wrapped up in keeping up with the Jones’s or place far too much concern in popularity or appearance this verse brings us home to where our heart needs to be.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Mathew 6:19-21
